INTENT Podcast 013: Stephen Somers

From humble beginnings in a Starbucks shop in Belfast, Stephen was eventually able to grow his business, Marketplace Superheroes, into 7-figures. Not only that, he currently owns and is an investor in several other companies as well and is looking at a $12-million revenue by the end of 2020.

But funny enough, Stephen doesn’t really consider himself to be a businessman, but rather, a marketer.

He strongly believes that the value in a business is not in the product or service itself, but in the actual marketing of it. This approach, together with his ability to find out what customers need, has taught him many valuable insights in business that he is currently teaching to others.

In today’s episode, Stephen talks about how he was able to grow multiple companies through being ethical, realistic, and self-aware. We get to learn more about Stephen’s unique and humble view in the world of business and why that has made him the successful entrepreneur he is today.

“That’s the big thing. Knowing what you’re good at, figuring out what you’re really good at, and being honest about what you’re really good at...and then designing your life and your business around those things.” -- Stephen Somers

INTENT Podcast 004: Ben Poggemiller

When Ben was younger he always had a creative side to him. He also always thought of ways to make money from this creative side of his. In elementary school, he drew comics books with the idea of selling them to friends. This mindset carried over into high school where he and his locker partner sold food, drinks and candy out of their locker. They happen to be business partners today in his local brick and mortar business. Ben later went on to work for a family that owned 5 branches of the Tim Hortons Canadian restaurant chain.

He handled the equipment maintenance for the chains.

He soon realised this wasn’t his dream knowing he always wanted to get involved in education and be an academic. After deciding NOT to pursue a PhD, he chose to do something that will utilise all the skills he had picked up from university.

Today, we find out what got Ben into Facebook ads, How he went from an employee to decide I’m going to start a local business.

INTENT Podcast Intro: Tega Diegbe

This episode is to talk a little bit about the podcast, what I envisioned for the podcast and what I hope to achieve with the podcast.

I spent like three months trying to think of a super clever name for the podcast. When I settled on INTENT, I had to think of a fancy reason why I would call my podcast intent. It could be tied to intention, it could be tied to intention and entrepreneurship. It could be tied to how entrepreneurs will, their intent into existence.

I do the stuff that I know and love to do so well and stay in my comfort zone. So first and foremost, this podcast is going to be a way for me to step out of my comfort zone. The way I met these people and these people, I'm referring to, is going to be my podcast guests. The way that I've met these people would have been interacting with them primarily in a business sense. And as we did more business stuff together, as we did deals and worked out different things together, I've gotten to know some of them.

So I wanted to get to know these people better. And in wanting to get to know them better, I knew that I couldn't maybe travel to where they are cause these guys are all over the world. In asking them questions and getting their answers to things that I'm intrigued about, I hope that people will learn different things that they can take away and use in their day to day lives.

I would hope to grow into a place where we can just sit and talk business, talk about business and lessons learned from all that.  I hope you enjoyed this episode and you maybe got something from it that you can take and use and implement in your business or life.
